Matt Murray was born on May 25, 1994, in Thunder Bay, Ontario, Canada. He started playing with the Thunder Bay Minor Hockey Association from his childhood. Regarding his nationality, Matt is Canadian and belongs to white ethnicity.

Murray spends his young age playing AA before he moved to Thunder Bay Kings AAA programs. He led his King to a 3-2 season with the Kings and appeared in 40 games with a 2.28 GAA and shutouts. He was selected in the 2nd round of 2010 OHL Priority Selection by the Sault Ste. Marie Greyhounds and played major hockey in the Ontario Hockey League.

As Matt began his career since his childhood, in 2013, he signed a 3 years entry-level contract with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He set an AHL record for the longest shutout streak by not allowing any of the goals for 304 minutes and 11 seconds.

Matt even set a record by breaking a record for rookie AHL goaltenders. After winning the Baz Bastien Memorial Awards as the League’s best goaltender, he was selected to AHL First All-Star Team and Rookie Team.

In the 2015-2016 season, Matt was recalled from the AHL to the Pittsburgh Penguins and made his NHL debut in a 2-1 loss against the Carolina Hurricanes. And in 2016, he was again called up by Pittsburgh Penguins and then he started his 9th games to finish the season.

Matt made his NHL playoff debut by allowing 1 goal as the Penguins defeated the New York Ranger 3-1 and recorded his first NHL playoff shutout in a 5-0 win over the Ranger.

In the season 2016-2017, Matt broke his hand and could not play during international play. But a gap, he returns and recorded 32 wind, a. 923 save percentage, 2.41 GAA, and 4 shutouts.

Matt finished the season by holding the position within the top 10 of the NHL qualified goaltenders and even represented Team North America at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey.

During 2017-2018 season, Matt was struck in the head with a puck shot by teammate Olli Maatta and was forced to leave the season. Finally, he returned in February 2018 and played against New York Islanders. He recorded the longest playoff shutout streak in the history of Penguins at 225:49.
